California and NERIS
The federal NERIS mandate applies to California departments as it applies nationwide. California fire departments report through the state fire reporting system and the California State Fire Marshal's office, which coordinates with USFA on NERIS implementation guidance.

California Department Context
- California has one of the highest wildland fire incident volumes in the country — NERIS wildland fire module requirements are particularly relevant for California departments
- Large combined departments like CAL FIRE, LAFD, and SFFD have dedicated NERIS implementation resources that smaller departments may not have access to
- Rural volunteer departments in Northern California and the Central Valley may have limited implementation support from state or county resources
- California departments use a range of RMS vendors, meaning NERIS implementation experience varies significantly by agency
