NERIS in New York

NERIS became mandatory January 1, 2026. New York has one of the most complex fire service landscapes in the country — from large urban departments to thousands of small volunteer fire companies across the state.

New York and NERIS

The federal NERIS mandate applies to New York departments as it applies nationwide. The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control coordinates fire reporting for state departments and provides guidance on NERIS implementation.

  • The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services coordinates fire reporting for non-NYC departments
  • New York's mix of large urban departments and small volunteer fire companies creates significant variation in NERIS implementation capacity
