NERIS became mandatory January 1, 2026. Ohio departments range from large urban career departments to small volunteer companies. The NERIS transition affects each differently.

Ohio Department Context

  • Ohio has a mix of large metro departments (Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati) and a large number of rural volunteer and combination departments
  • The Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office coordinates fire reporting for Ohio departments and provides NERIS transition guidance
  • Ohio historically had high NFIRS participation rates, giving most departments some familiarity with structured incident reporting
  • Combination departments in Ohio suburbs often have the most acute NERIS burden — enough call volume to feel the documentation weight but limited dedicated administrative staff
